Proof

Fifteen years of doing the work, not describing it.

Graystone is a small practice built on one strategist's track record. Here's what that record actually is — and what it taught us about which numbers matter.

Track record
Agency

Co-founded and sold a digital marketing agency — scaled past $2M in annual revenue before the exit. Built the department from inside a web development firm, took it over when the firm changed direction, and held it together through a partner's departure before selling to an adjacent competitor.

Consultancy

Founded a marketing consultancy serving brands in 16 countries — including several of the most recognizable names in the outdoor industry, across apparel, footwear, gear, water filtration, and ocean conservation. The work moved deliberately upstream: campaigns first, then messaging, then mission, vision, and values facilitation and B-Corp-style certification work.

In-house

A decade inside a family-owned boat dealership — first as director of marketing, then as its ongoing strategic advisor. Award-winning, and still a client ten years on.

Origin

Started on a retail floor. Managed footwear and apparel at a national outdoor retailer, then trained sales and product staff across a region and opened new stores in two states. That's where the outdoor industry, conservation, and the habit of listening to customers before writing for them all began.

Now

Graystone Consultants — strategic marketing advisory for values-led, founder-led companies and the lean teams inside them. Outdoor recreation is where we're best known; the work travels to any business with something real to stand for.

What the work looks like

Three engagements that shaped how Graystone works.

Client names are kept private here out of respect for the relationships. Specifics are available in a conversation.

Family-owned dealership · 10 years

From "we need more leads" to a store people choose on purpose.

The call

A family-owned dealership in a category where competitors sell many of the same boats from the same manufacturers. The ask, as it usually is, was more leads. The harder question was what made this store worth choosing over the one down the shoreline.

The work

Ten years, first from inside as director of marketing, then as advisor. Messaging built on what the family actually did differently, and a marketing operation the team could run themselves. The store is award-winning, still family-owned, and still a client.

Outdoor brands · consultancy years

Moving upstream from the campaign to the reason for it.

The call

Recognized outdoor and conservation brands, engaged for campaign work. Good products, real convictions — and marketing that kept starting at the bottom of the architecture, asking what this season should say.

The work

Campaign engagements became messaging engagements, then mission, vision, and values facilitations — running the company's real business challenges through the filter until leadership could see it work. The pattern repeated enough times, across enough countries, that it became Graystone's method.

The one we fired · early agency years

The green dashboard that was making the business worse.

The call

Move the numbers. And the numbers moved — traffic up, impressions up, every metric a competitor would put in a deck to justify the renewal.

The work

The business couldn't handle the volume. Service was poor, and every customer the marketing sent went online afterward and said so. Winning on the dashboard meant manufacturing one-star reviews for a company paying for help. We ended the engagement — and never again started a project without asking what's underneath.

On numbers

Numbers can lie. Not by being false — by being naked.

Every agency page you've read has a wall of percentages on it. Notice which ones. Impressions, click-through, engagement, reach — not the metrics hardest to fake, the ones cheapest to move.

A number means little without another number beside it, and nothing at all without the story underneath it. Why did traffic climb while revenue sat still? Why is that salesperson underperforming? Why do the service reviews keep coming back the same?

We're not in the business of growing your marketing numbers. We're in the business of growing your business.

So the proof we care about looks like a store that's still family-owned a decade later. A team that can write Thursday's banner in a minute because they know what they stand for. A price message that fell to third-tier because there was finally more worth saying first.

If you want to see the dashboards too, ask. We keep them. We just don't lead with them.
